How to Write an Argumentative Essay in English: Tips and Structure

The argumentative essay is a common writing task in English exams. It requires you to take a position on a topic and support it with logical reasons and evidence.

1. The Introduction and Thesis Statement

Start with a hook to grab the reader's attention. Introduce the topic generally, and end your introduction with a clear "Thesis Statement." This is the core sentence that states your main opinion and the points you will discuss.

2. Body Paragraphs: One Idea per Paragraph

Each body paragraph should start with a "Topic Sentence" that introduces a specific reason. Support this reason with details, facts, or examples. Use "Transition Words" like (Furthermore, In addition, Consequently) to make your ideas flow smoothly.

3. The Counter-Argument: Showing Balance

A strong argumentative essay acknowledges the opposite side. Briefly mention what people who disagree might say, and then "Refute" it by showing why your position is still stronger. This shows you have thought deeply about the topic.

4. The Conclusion: A Strong Finish

In the conclusion, restate your thesis in different words and summarize your main arguments. End with a final thought, a call to action, or a prediction. Do NOT introduce new ideas in the conclusion.

5. Vocabulary for Persuasion

Use strong verbs and adjectives. Instead of saying "good," use "effective" or "beneficial." Instead of "I think," use "It is evident that" or "Advocates argue that." Academic vocabulary significantly improves your writing grade.
